It's time for the library's annual flea market! The library team is already accepting donations of German books, tapes, CDs and DVDs (which need to be originals), as well as puzzles and boardgames, so should you be doing some spring cleaning soon, bring a bag to school on any of the next Saturday mornings. The flea market will be open on March 28 from 9-11. Rumor has it that there will be a lot for sale this year, so plan on coming in to shop. All proceeds from the flea market sale go back into the library to fund future acquistions.
We're pleased to invite all parents to attend a special morning program on Saturday, March 21 during school hours in the auditorium 505 on the 5th floor:
Baby boom at our school: Congratulations to Aurelie Kamdem who is teaching 6B and who gave birth to her daugther Lizabbigail on Valentine's Day, February 14th. Amazingly, Ms. Kamdem was back at work already the following week, not missing even one class. Three weeks later to the day, Aedan Alexander Mitchell was born on March 7th. Mr. Mitchell is teaching 7A this year at our school. Congratulations from all of us at the Saturday School to the Kamdem and Mitchell families for the healthy arrivals of their children. How appropriate that both babies were born on a Saturday - no doubt the best day of the week!
The 2009 AATG results have arrived, and as in the past, our school's average raw score is about 90. (Briefly to explain: the raw score is the result of how many questions out of 100 have been answered correctly. The national average is 70). Congratulations to all students in grades 6 through 10 who took this test on January 10. We'd like to particularly mention the impressive results of our 9th, 10th and even a few 8th grade students who took level 4 (the highest difficulty level of this test): 73% of all of them achieved a raw score of 90 and higher. Furthermore,
We received this information about an event hosted by the Goethe Society of New England:
"Alexandra Haueisen will give a power-point presentation covering her research on German immigrants in 19th century Boston. This presentation is based on her recently completed doctoral thesis that she successfully defended at Georg-August-Universität in Göttingen. Her thesis has been published under the title Das Bostoner Intelligenz-Blatt: Kulturgeschichte der deutschen Immigration in Boston im 19. Jahrhundert – zur Biographie einer deutschen Kolonie. Ms Haueisen was born in Bavaria and now resides with her family in Cambridge. The presentation, in English, will take place on Sunday, March 22, 2:00pm at the Goethe Society of New England which meets at the Goethe-Institut Boston, 170 Beacon Street. Refreshments will be served. There is a guest fee of $10 ($5.00 for students). To RSVP or for additional information, please call Michael Hager at 617-723-7133."
Two of our teachers at the German Saturday School are also artists - and will present their work at an exhibit at the German International School in Allston. If you'd like to meet the artists and view their art - Heidi Schlager (teaching 8th Grade at our school) and Liliane Becker de Miranda (Kindergarten teacher) - they will be hosting an event on March 12th starting at 7pm at the German International School that will feature other artists and cabaret songs performed by Megan Roth.

Thanks to the sponsorship of a company, this year's yearbook will be distributed for free to all families! Thanks to the committed parent volunteer team, it will have a different layout and feature some new content, but it will still be in black & white. Unless, we find some additional sponsors who'd be interested in contributing to the year book! In that case, we could print, for the first time - our year book in color and still give a copy to each family. If your company would be interested in this kind of sponsorship (in return for recognition in our year book), please contact Emily Westhoven immediately and request details.
Mrs. Lister's 4B has been penning letters to students from a 4A across the Atlantic, the Kastanienbaum-Grundschule in Berlin-Mitte, Germany, and are now eagerly waiting to hear back from them. Through this project, both teachers are hoping to put some fun into the practice of writing letters and to encourage the cultural exchange. A similar exchange is blossoming in Ms.
